About Checked Sources

Checked Sources was started by a practitioner who verifies sources for a living and wanted a better record of it.

Why it exists

Every report built on research rests on its sources. AI tools have made finding sources faster and checking them more important, because the tools can produce citations and quotations that look right and are not. The check itself is old-fashioned: open the source and read it. What has been missing is a way to organize that check across dozens or hundreds of sources and to keep a record of it that someone else can rely on.

The founder

Checked Sources was founded by Bill Hartzer, CEO of Hartzer Consulting and founder of DNAccess. He has more than 25 years of experience in search engine marketing, domain names and online investigations, and serves as an expert witness on search engine optimization, paid search, social media and online reputation.

He is also the author of The Expert Record, a book for expert witnesses who use AI, and of The Expert Record Standard v1.0, a free eight-clause method published at theexpertrecord.com. The verification log in Checked Sources follows a field schema published there. The Standard certifies no product, including this one.

Principles

  • The person who signs a report owns its sources. The tool records the check; it does not perform the judgment.
  • A record should say exactly what it shows and no more.
  • Confidential documents should not have to leave the user's computer.
  • Anyone should be able to verify the record without trusting the service.
